As Australia's mining boom remains at full throttle, Western Australia continues to grow Australia's job market, so much so that an exhausted supply of Australian-born workers has forced the State to look to migrants to fill thousands of skilled job vacancies.
The following excerpts from The Australian explain further;
Immigrants are more likely to find work in Western Australia than anywhere else, while Victoria - the birthplace of multiculturalism - has emerged as the employment stronghold for those born locally.
The key mining state has seen an extra 52,000 immigrants employed during the past year while 36,400 Australian-born workers lost their jobs in the same period.
In WA, Queensland and NSW the overseas-born have consistently claimed more than half the jobs created since the global financial crisis first struck. WA has seen 64,500 jobs go to immigrants during the past three years while the number of Australian-born in work fell by 6000.
In Queensland, the score was 56,100 jobs to immigrants and 33,700 to the Australian-born.
NSW split the new jobs almost 50-50 - 86,900 to immigrants and 86,400 to the Australian-born. Victoria broke the pattern with only 33,100 jobs for immigrants but 149,400 for the Australian-born.
WA is the obvious winner from the resources boom, but it needs immigrants to fill the job vacancies. Victoria is taking the cream of the non-mining activity.
The most recent ABS summary of immigration trends, using figures to November 2010, exploded the old myth that cheaper-paid foreigners were pricing locals out of jobs. The new arrivals are going straight to the top of the employment ladder - pointing to a skills shortage.
